Boasting 468 rooms over 19 floors, the rooms are well-furnished and luxuriant. Currently, based on my internet search, rates are available from as low as RM225++ or USD79 onwards. For a 5-star rated hotel in the best of locations at the Bukit Bintang Triangle, that's a very good deal, I would say.

I've always wanted to visit Langkawi. My sister used to study there at a college in Pantai Cenang and she did have a good time there. I must go to Langkawi and perhaps, next year being Visit Malaysia Year 2007 would be a good time. Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach, Sarawak

Nestled away in Teluk Bandung, Santubong which is a 40 minutes drive from Kuching, Sarawak is the famed Damai Beach. There are three international-class resort hotels here, one of which is the Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach, which belongs to the InterContinental Hotels Group. Amongst the three, the Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach is also the oldest and I think, the best.Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach sprawls over 90 acres of prime sea-front land, framed by lush tropical forests with a view of the legendary and majestic Mount Santubong in the foreground which lends an air of mystery to this place.
Apart from the usual beach hotel facilities like swimming pool and water sports, there is also an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course nearby - The Damai Golf and Country Club for those who can't leave their golf clubs behind.
Sarawak is rich in its culture and diversity in the many native tribes living harmoniously in this Land of the Hornbills. Just adjacent to this resort is the award winning Sarawak Cultural Village where visitors can experience the culture and lifestyle of the main races and tribes living in this state. This living museum conveniently potrays the respective lifestyle of the major racial groups amidst 14 acres of equatorial vegetation. I onced stayed at their garden chalets (beach front) and really enjoyed my stay there. It has all the luxuries of a 4 star rated hotel but retaining a natural kampung style decor which brings you back to nature.
For food, you might want to check out the nearby fishing village of Kampung Buntal for some great tasting seafood. There are many seafood restaurants there and some of them are built on stilts to enable you to have a good view of the South China Sea.

Sunway Hotel Georgetown

I stayed at the Sunway Hotel, Georgetown last December and was quite impressed with the hotel. The hotel is situated at New Lane in Georgetown, Penang and is a 5 minute walk away from KOMTAR. Whilst KOMTAR is in quite a pathetic state considering that it used to be THE shopping centre, there is still one supermarket there in case you need to grab something.
The room was clean and spacious and check-in was done quite fast. We were given a room facing the Penang Bridge...and a Hindu temple. The ringing bells from the Hindu temple was a bit of a bother in the wee hours of the morning though. Unfortunately, I think the windows were not double-glazed for sound-proofing. I won't blame the temple devotees but I thought the hotel could have been more thoughtful.
Anyway, just two doors away from Sunway Hotel are 2 restaurants / coffee shops selling great Penang hawker fare - Rojak, Char Kuey Teow, Prawn Mee, Fried Oyster (O chien) and such. We were there for one night only and could not find enough room to accommodate all the great food available.
Presently, Sunway Hotel is offering rooms from RM180 nett with breakfast for 2. That was what we paid for the last time we went. Breakfast was not too bad either and we had the luxury of using the club floor cafe (which was on the same floor as our room) with personalised service.

Hyatt Regency Kinabalu from RM223.00 per night

Hyatt Regency Kinabalu is located in the heart of the city of Kota Kinabalu, facing the South China Sea, the capital of the state of Sabah is also the international gateway to East Malaysia. Only 15 minutes from Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu sits in the hub of the vibrant business, shopping and entertainment districts.
I stayed at this hotel in the year 2003 and was very impressed with the room (which is not unlike the picture above). I was given a room facing the sea and I could see the little (and not so little) boats along the harbour. The room is well kept and full of amenities and I had a comfortable and enjoyable stay there. I remembered the bed was great and even took a quick nap just before I left for the airport.
The harbour is a hive of activity as there is a market nearby including a Filipino Market where you can get handicrafts made by the Filipino community as well as sea produce. Lots of things to buy, I must say.
As this hotel is located in the town centre, there are plenty of shops around. In fact, the hotel adjoins a shopping centre (Wisma Merdeka, if I remembered the name correctly) which has plenty of shops including local handicraft shops (where you can buy souveniers), pharmacy, book stores, saloons etc. There is a fast food chain across the road (McDonald's or Burger King, I can't remember) if you want a quick bite. If you are interested in exploring the town, this hotel will be suitable for you.

Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort, Sarawak

Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort is located on the shores of a spectacular freshwater lake, surrounded by mountains and the unspoiled rainforests of Sarawak. Its design is based on the traditional timber longhouses of the region's native Iban Tribes. The resort has 100 rooms, the Nanga Mepi Restaurant, Wong Irup Bar, an outdoor terrace, a swimming pool, a meeting room for up to 220 guests, and a boat jetty for arriving guests. Nearby is the 27,000-hectare Batang Ai National Park.I stayed at this Resort about 5 years back and was very impressed with the place. The boat ride across the lake, is in itself, an experience to be savoured and remembered fondly.
For that trip, we travelled by the resort's van from Kuching. The van ride takes approximately 3 1/2 hours towards the Batang Ai Dam. When we arrived at one side of the dam, the boat was already waiting for us and we were given life-jackets each for safety reasons. The man-made lake (the dam, if you call it) is huge! Surrounded by mountains and trees, you'll be forgiven for thinking that you are being transported to another world - away from the hustles and bustles of the city.
There is a welcoming party at the Resort. Basically, the boat ride ends at the Resort. The room we had was nice. As it is very cooling to be in the midst of the jungle, no air-conditioning is necessary. Mosquito netting is standard and you can almost touch the trees if you reach out your hand from the window. As this is a eco-resort, as little trees are removed as possible to maintain the eco-system.
There was a Resident Guide (a Briton who was based in Sarawak as part of the British armed forces and made Sarawak his home after Sarawak's independance from the British Government) who is very well versed with the jungle. He gives a guided tour on a nature trail and showed us some medicinal plants along the way. I wonder if he's still there... he's quite a character, really - donning a hat, Steve Irwin-type of khakis and armed with a parang...and very generous with his wealth of knowledge. It was truly an enjoyable experience walking with him. Oh by the way, the guided tour is free. Just be there at the schedule time and pray that the weather is good.
